Air-drying technique for preserving custom embroidered patches and woven labels on clothing

Your custom woven labels and embroidered patches represent hours of design work and careful manufacturing. Whether you've invested in premium branded apparel or created custom pieces for your team or business, proper care ensures these details look professional for years to come.

We've been producing custom labels and patches since 2008, and we've learned that the difference between labels that last decades and those that fail after a few washes often comes down to how they're cared for. The good news? With the right approach, your labeled garments can maintain their appearance through hundreds of wear and wash cycles.

Understanding Your Label and Patch Materials

Before diving into care instructions, it's important to understand what you're working with. Modern woven labels typically use polyester or rayon threads, while embroidered patches combine thread with various backing materials.

Woven labels are generally more durable than printed labels because the design is actually woven into the fabric structure. However, they can still be damaged by excessive heat, harsh chemicals, or aggressive washing.

Embroidered patches have more complex construction. The thread itself is usually polyester (which is quite resilient), but the backing material varies. Cotton backings are softer but more delicate. Synthetic backings are tougher but can be sensitive to high heat.

Washing Techniques That Preserve Quality

Temperature makes the biggest difference in how well your labels and patches hold up over time.  Hot water might seem like it gets clothes cleaner, but it's the enemy of long-lasting custom details.

Use cold water for most labeled garments. Modern detergents work effectively in cold water, and the lower temperature prevents shrinkage, color bleeding, and adhesive failure. We recommend 30°C (86°F) as the maximum temperature for most custom labeled items.

Choose gentle cycles that reduce agitation. The "delicate" or "hand wash" cycles on modern machines provide sufficient cleaning while minimizing stress on patches.

Select appropriate detergents that won't break down threads or backing materials. Avoid bleach and fabric softeners, which can weaken fibers and cause colors to fade.

Drying   Methods That Extend Life

How you dry your labeled garments is just as important as how you wash them. Heat is the biggest threat to both adhesive integrity and thread quality.

Air drying is always best for items with custom patches. Hang items in a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight, which can fade colors over time.

When using machine dryers, use low heat and remove items while slightly damp. High heat can shrink backing materials at different rates than the main fabric, causing puckering or lifting.

Never over-dry labeled garments. This removes natural moisture from fibers and makes them brittle. Stop the cycle when items are barely damp and let them finish air drying.

Ironing and Pressing Guidelines

Proper ironing techniques can refresh your labeled garments without causing damage, but the wrong approach can ruin patches and labels permanently.

Always use a pressing cloth over patches and labels when ironing. A thin cotton cloth or pressing paper creates a barrier between the iron and your custom details, preventing melting or scorching.

Iron around labels and patches rather than directly over them when possible. Focus on smoothing the main garment areas and use steam to relax wrinkles near custom elements.

Be extra careful with metallic elements in patches or labels. Metallic threads can melt at surprisingly low temperatures, so always use lower heat settings and pressing cloths.

When Professional Cleaning Is Worth It

Some labeled garments benefit from professional dry cleaning, especially if they're valuable or difficult to replace.

Consider professional cleaning for expensive branded items, delicate fabrics with complex patches, or anything with metallic or specialty threads.

Communicate with your  cleaner about the patches and labels on your garments. Point out any special areas of concern and ask about their experience with similar items.
